What Is Neuromuscular Re-Education?

Neuromuscular Re-Education (NMR) is a specialized therapeutic approach that addresses pain, postural dysfunction, and movement limitations by retraining the communication between the nervous system and the muscles. Instead of directly manipulating soft tissue, NMR uses carefully designed movement exercises and gentle stretches to re-establish healthy movement patterns, strengthen underactive muscles, and restore balance throughout the musculoskeletal system.

The premise is straightforward: many cases of chronic pain and dysfunction are not purely structural problems — they are also movement problems. The brain and nervous system have learned inefficient, compensatory patterns that keep the body stuck in a cycle of strain. NMR interrupts that cycle by teaching the body new, more efficient ways to move.

At Keystone Body Therapies, every NMR program is completely individualized. Your therapist builds a program specifically for your body, your imbalances, and your goals — then guides you through the exercises and ensures you can perform them correctly at home between sessions.

This place is amazing! Clayton is a wonderful community member and has built a wonderful spot for folks to come for healing and recovery. HIGHLY recommend, Kee! So gifted at his job. I am an avid runner and these sessions are so important for recovery. Thanks, Keystone!

Very happy with the massage session I had with Kee. He is very professional, knowledgeable and skilled. He checked in often to see if the pressure was good. After just one session, a persistent issue I have had for a while, has improved. I will go back for more treatments and definitely recommend this place and the therapist Kee.

This place is awesome. I’ve worked with Clayton and Audrey. I’ve done Neuro-muscular re-education. They provide excellent information and service. Some of the best massages I’ve had. Great atmosphere. Good location on the West side. Adequate parking. Very polished and professional environment.

Clayton is amazing and is able to isolate issues and address them. He is fantastic with both full body and targeted areas. His work has a lasting impact.

Heard about Keystone through a Work benefit job fair. Hands-down by far the best massage I’ve had in a long time. I have had several massages with Kee and he is truly amazing. He is very professional, knowledgeable, does an amazing deep tissue massage.

What Can Neuromuscular Re-Education Treat?

NMR is appropriate for a wide range of conditions and is accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels:

Chronic postural pain (neck, shoulder, back, hip) Muscle imbalances causing joint strain
Recurring injuries due to faulty movement patterns Post-injury or post-surgical movement rehabilitation
Scoliosis and spinal alignment issues Hip and pelvic imbalances
Knee pain from tracking and alignment problems Balance and coordination deficits
Sports performance optimization General deconditioning and loss of functional mobility

NMR is gentle enough for older adults and those with pain or mobility limitations, while specific enough to address the needs of high-performance athletes.

How It Works — Your Personalized Program

Your first NMR session begins with a thorough movement assessment. Your therapist will observe how you stand, sit, and move through fundamental patterns to identify the specific imbalances and compensations contributing to your symptoms.

From that assessment, a personalized sequence of exercises is designed for you. These are not generic gym exercises — they are precise, targeted movements chosen to activate specific muscles, release inhibited tissue, and re-educate the neuromuscular pathways responsible for your dysfunction.

You’ll perform the exercises during your session under your therapist’s guidance, and receive a home program so you can continue making progress between visits. Most clients are surprised by how subtle yet effective the exercises are — even people who have tried yoga, Pilates, or physical therapy find NMR to be a meaningfully different experience.

Neuromuscular Re-Education as a Complement to Bodywork

NMR is one of the most powerful complements to hands-on bodywork that exists. While therapeutic bodywork and structural integration release and reorganize the body’s tissue, NMR trains the nervous system to maintain those changes by building new movement habits. The two approaches together create results that are faster, deeper, and more durable than either can produce alone.

Many of our clients incorporate NMR sessions between their bodywork appointments for exactly this reason.

Frequently Asked Questions — Neuromuscular Re-Education

Is this like physical therapy?

There is overlap, but NMR at Keystone Body Therapies is distinct in its approach. Our focus is on the neuromuscular communication patterns and how they contribute to your specific imbalances, using exercises selected through hands-on assessment rather than a standardized protocol.

Do I need to be fit or active to benefit?

Absolutely not. The exercises used in NMR are gentle and can be scaled to any fitness level. Many of our NMR clients are dealing with significant pain or very limited mobility — the program is designed to work with your body where it is right now.

Can I do NMR if I'm currently in pain?

Yes. NMR is specifically designed to treat pain without manipulation, making it an ideal option when hands-on bodywork may be too intense or when you want a complementary approach to your recovery.

How many sessions will I need?

Many clients see meaningful improvement in 4–8 sessions. Because you’ll also be doing home exercises, your progress accelerates between appointments. Your therapist will reassess regularly and update your program as you improve.
